Partridge Island
An island near the Saint John harbour and in the Bay of Fundy. Uninhabited now. In the early 70's and only 13 years old, my friend and I hiked over the breakwater. We jumped the wide gaps of large boulders, the breakwater.
On the island, we found the abandoned ruins of a hospital once used to treat or contain sick Irish immigrants. We recognized remains of World War gun installations.
At that time, a lighthouse keeper lived on the island. Dogs barking in the distance kept us on high alert. The friendly keeper eventually met up with us. Although a DOT sign warned not to trespass, he allowed us to continue exploring.
Saint Johners are familiar with the depressing drone of the fog horn. Invented and first stationed on Partridge island but now silent.
We returned home and shared our adventure with our parents. My good Father then decided to take the trip himself.
The Legion magazine below has a great article on the island's history.
